The 4th P+ARG Biennial Graduate Student Conference: Networks of Power and Knowledge invites architects, urbanists, planners, and researchers from related fields. The conference questions how we understand the networks of power and knowledge and the implicit human condition that sustains and transforms architecture and planning practices. Further, it questions how we can reconsider the Foucauldian premise of ‘knowledge as power’ in our contemporaneity characterized by the global phenomenon of ‘post-truth politics’?

Speaking
Jan 20, 2018

Lukas Pauer was selected as a speaker and roundtable discussant for the Designing Geopolitics Workshop at the University of Basel, DGW on Jan 20, 2018.

Geopolitics has emerged as a key term to understand the global dimension of architecture, urbanism, and design in the twentieth century. However, geopolitics tends to mean little more than international relations and the concept’s own historical trajectory remains largely unacknowledged. The workshop brings together scholars of architectural and design history, historical geography, and science and technology studies to explore the nexus of geopolitics and design from the late nineteenth century to the present. Its aim is to study geopolitics beyond the bounds of nationalist propaganda, to include the various ways in which design thinking has shaped political geography and how geopolitical concepts and frameworks were integrated into the disciplines of architecture, urbanism, and design.

Nov 20, 2017

Lukas Pauer was invited as a speaker and roundtable discussant for the Resilience in Africa, South America, and Asia: Implementing Outside-the-Box Thinking to Everyday Development Challenges event at the World Bank on Nov 20, 2017.

The aim of the Resilience in Africa, South America, and Asia: Implementing Outside-the-Box Thinking to Everyday Development Challenges event among leaders of the architecture and planning domain is to cultivate a discussion surrounding the benefits of new technologies as they relate to parts of the world that are especially vulnerable to climate change. The word ‘resiliency’ refers to stability and adaptability. Urban planners have been using this term a lot recently as they find themselves designing plans for coastal regions that are prone to flooding and extreme weather conditions.
